What Is the Technical Security System (TSE)?
The Technical Security System (TSE) is a legally required security solution for electronic cash register systems in Germany. Its purpose is to protect cash transactions from manipulation and ensure that all transactions are recorded completely and cannot be altered afterward. According to the German Cash Register Security Regulation (KassenSichV), electronic point-of-sale systems must be equipped with a certified TSE.
How Does the TSE Work?
For every transaction processed through the cash register, the TSE generates a digital signature. This signature acts like a digital fingerprint and ensures that the transaction has not been changed afterward.
All relevant transaction data is stored securely and can be reviewed by the tax authorities during an audit or cash register inspection.
Which Data Is Stored in the TSE?
The TSE or the TSE QR code on the receipt can contain the following information:
- Serial number of the cash register system
- Serial number of the TSE security module
- Signature / verification value (digital fingerprint)
- Sequential signature counter
- Transaction number
- Start and end time of the transaction
- Amount per payment type
These data points can be read and verified by the tax authorities if required.
Which Information Appears on the Receipt?
Once the TSE is activated, additional fiscal information is automatically included on receipts or within the QR code.
This may include:
- Signature counter
- Transaction number
- Timestamp
- Verification value / digital signature
Why Is the TSE Important?
The TSE helps businesses:
- Comply with German legal requirements
- Prevent manipulation of cash transactions
- Ensure secure and transparent transaction records
- Prepare for tax audits and cash register inspections
Without an active TSE, the cash register system may not comply with legal regulations in Germany.
Which TSE Does Shore Use?
Shore uses a certified cloud-based TSE solution provided by Fiskaly. Transaction signatures are created and stored automatically and securely in the background.
